Levels of Membership

The Professional Board of Hypnotherapy recognizes that there are differing levels of training and standards within the hypnosis field. Our intention is to recognize an acceptable standard of training which is required to maintain ethical standards of practice. Our intention is to establish the standards of training required to be a registered and certified member of the Professional Board of Hypnotherapy. The levels of membership which available are: Registered, Certified, Registered and Certified, Affiliate, and Student: Hypnotherapist, Clinical Hypnotherapist, International Hypnotherapist, Certified Hypnotherapy Instructor, and Approved Hypnosis School.

Certified Hypnotherapist:

This designation recognizes the trained hypnotherapist who wishes to practice hypnotherapy based on a recognized training course in hypnosis. A designation given to the practitioner within the field of hypnosis.

Registration as a Hypnotherapist in the Professional Board of Hypnotherapy will require fulfilment and proof of the following criteria:

  • Any individual who qualifies for membership who has a minimum of 50 hours of training at a ‘qualified’ hypnosis training school. Proof of training is required.
  • Any individual who has a certificate of training from an approved training school in hypnosis.
  • Any individual who is certified and registered by another hypnosis membership organisation. Proof of registration is required.

Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist:

Clinical Hypnotherapist designation with the Professional Board of Hypnotherapy recognizes the professionals schooled and trained in other therapeutic modalities who are also interested in or currently utilize hypnosis in their practices or are full-time Hypnotherapists. To gain this designation the therapist must have completed a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in a mental health or social science field, must be registered with their registering body for that profession, and must have taken a hypnosis training program from an approved school.

Registration as a hypnotherapist in the Professional Board of Hypnotherapy will require fulfilment and proof of all the following criteria:

  • Any individual who possesses an approved University Degree in a Mental Health, Medical, Social Sciences, or related helping profession.
  • Must be qualified in their field of practice and be registered with their own professional certifying or registering body, or professional association.
  • Must have attended and graduated from a qualified hypnosis training program through an approved hypnosis training institute.
  • Must have a minimum of 50 ‘in-house’ hours of hypnosis training through an approved training institute.

Certified Hypnotherapy Instructor:

A Professional Board of Hypnotherapy Instructor must meet or exceed the requirements listed in the Hypnotherapist or Clinical Hypnotherapist designation. Requirements will not be waived, however, if an individual applying for Certified Hypnotherapy Instructor can show that they can meet or exceed the requirements through training and experience and can document that they have been an instructor for a minimum period of two years prior to application their experience may be “grand-fathered” and the person may apply for the Certified Hypnotherapy Instructor designation.

Registration as a Certified Hypnotherapy Instructor in the Professional Board of Hypnotherapy will require fulfilment and proof of all the following criteria:

  • Must meet all requirements of a Hypnotherapist or Clinical Hypnotherapist.
  • Demonstrate that they are employed at or are the instructor at a qualified training institution.

  • Any individual who has a certificate of training from an approved training school in hypnosis at the advanced or Master’s level.
  • Any individual who is certified and registered by another hypnosis membership organization in the same category. Proof of registration is required.

Approved Hypnosis Training School:

A school or training institution may become a Professional Board of Hypnotherapy Certified Hypnosis Training Institution. The training institute must have qualified instructors meeting or exceeding the requirements as listed in the Certified Hypnotherapy Instructor requirements section. Must be approved by the President and/or the Vice-President of the Professional Board of Hypnotherapy. Certification is to ensure high standards and competent instructors. Failure to ensure high standards and competent instructors will result in forfeiture of the Professional Board of Hypnotherapy designation and return of the Certificate of Registration as an Approved Hypnosis Training School. This designation as an Approved Hypnosis Training School is for membership purposes only and does not denote legal or ethical standards under the law of the land. Each Province, State, and jurisdiction may have differing requirements to be recognized through governmental channels. Again, the Professional Board of Hypnotherapy does not have any affiliations with any government regulators, you must pursue that designation on your own.

By becoming a Certified Training Institution the ‘School’ must meet or exceed all standards set forth and is required to submit training materials for audit by the President and Vice-president of the Professional Board of Hypnotherapy for approval. All decisions are made by the President and/or Vice-president concerning Certified Training Institutions.

Note: All certified members: Hypnotherapist, Clinical Hypnotherapist, Certified Hypnotherapy Instructor, International Hypnotherapist, and Students of Hypnotherapy agree to adhere to the ethical codes set forth in the ‘Professional Code of Rights and Responsibilities and the ‘Code of Ethics’ while members of our organization.

Requirements For Training Institution Certification:

An approved school will submit any and all:

  • brochures
  • training manuals
  • course outlines
  • tests
  • sample certificates
  • copy of the main text book used, or a list of all course texts
  • school information, listing years in operation, instructors, location, and any other relevant operation.
  • Trainers resume, listing qualifications, any registrations, and professional memberships.
  • any other information that would be helpful in describing the instruction your institution offers.

Member schools will maintain complete autonomy of their institutions, instructors and curriculum; however, if you are chosen to be an Approved Hypnosis School all ethical standards of the Professional Board of Hypnotherapy must be met and adhered to at all times while a member in good standing. Failure of any and all members to maintain ethical standards will result in the member institution being removed from the membership without compensation or refund of dues.
